My younger son often unwinds by playing on the piano, providing me with music as I cook dinner. We're looking forward to a visit from a good friend tonight (from Sydney). Unwinding at the end of the week over spaghetti bolognese and red wine, good conversation, and a few laughs.

Sounds delightful. Enjoy the music while you can,we don't see as much of our musical family member these days and I do miss the music. Is the portrait above the piano anyone special?
ReplyDeleteYes, I will, and I'm not looking forward to the time when the music leaves. The portrait is Tschaikovsky, drawn by a Russan woman who was the inspiration behind our Russian Saturday school when I was growing up. She has passed away (aged 92)
ReplyDeleteWhat a talented artist this inspiring lady was! Saturday schools that offered children language classes in their mother tongues seemed to mushroom in the 60's and 70's. But does that generation send THEIR children to these classes in the same numbers I wonder? Has English and monolingualism become the preference of this younger generation? A shame if it has.
ReplyDeleteI think not, Pam, but that's also because some ethnic groups (including my parents' generation of Russians) didn't want their children to lose their Russian roots and culture. In Sydney, the young Russian parents still send their children to Saturday School, but here we have assimilated more. There were aspects of that life that I didn't want for my children. It had nothing to do with language.
