Day 225 - Winter garden

The winter garden is surprisingly colourful. I took some photos in the late afternoon, with the sky darkening to an intensity which precedes heavy rain. Then I sat inside and watched the sheets of rain drench the grateful plants.

Day 215 - Chapel progress

Another lovely Winter day. Lovely if you ignore the fact that we've had so little rain all Winter. I stepped outside of the school library to take a photo of building progress. The chapel is taking shape. Funny how I love the skeleton better than the external structure. It's looking less interesting now.

Day 204 - Daphne

More winter flowers. I've been at home today, feeling unwell, so the opportunity to search for a more distant photo has been foiled. I love daphne, sweet-smelling and not too showy. I have two but I'm aware that these plants are capable of dying suddenly and unexpectedly. I'll just enjoy them while they're still flowering.

Day 203 - Helleboris

I love Helleboris and the way it adds colour to the Winter landscape. This white one is so white! Amongst other favourites in the garden, I really like the deep purple one.

Day 198 - Icecream in Winter

Winter in Melbourne need not be a time for dreary isolation. Here Guest photographer and Mystery Person indulge in some Brunetti's icecream.

Day 181 - Orange cake

I just realised how incredibly boring this photo is, especially with the colour of the table blending with the cake, but oh well. Just the day for baking - cold, incredibly windy, short periods of lashing rain. Orange cake has always been one of my favourites. Mmmmm... can't wait for a big slice with coffee.

Day 180 - Late in the day

Cold, late-afternoon sky. I'm not out in the backyard much these days, but when I am, I love checking out the changing backdrop to the trees. Winter has its own colours. I've been thinking how much less interesting Summer-blue skies are, with the hot sun bleaching out the tones with its shimmering heat. I love the depth and contrast of Winter colours.

Day 174 - Morning Winter sun

Managed to catch the golden sun projected on trees against an intense grey sky this morning. Lovely morning on my day off - quiet, warm inside, no need to rush. Everyone should have a day off a week. I recommend it; good for your wellbeing.

Day 171 - City day

City day again, as on most Saturdays. Today's weather was not so much grey as neutral, a cold kind of neutral that soaks up all colours in the landscape, rendering everything colourless. I love these days in the city because the greyness is a good backdrop for the coloured lights, making cafes cosy, and glowing in the Atrium of Federation Square, as pictured.

Day 164 - Royal Arcade

Stopped at an ATM for market money this morning, very cold air. I love Melbourne city in the winter, with its darkish laneways and cosy cafes. Here's the entrance to Royal Arcade. Funny, I don't usually notice the gold ornament above the entrance.

Day 133 - Catching the light

One thing I don't enjoy is knowing that we are moving closer to Winter. The worst part for me is the fact that it gets dark so early. It makes me want to crawl inside and not go anywhere. Isn't it funny how in the Summer it's still light until 9pm or so, and you feel like the day is still going on, but in Winter (or even Autumn), you feel the day ends some time after 5pm. There should be a switch in us that allows us to adapt to the seasons and function normally.
I took this photo just before it got dark. I ran out into the backyard and snapped before it became too late, and I was forced to take another inside shot.
