Day 234 - 19th birthday saga

Well, here's the saga of the 19th birthday cake.
We had fun making it.

Ok, here's the cake. If you look closely, you'll see the impending disaster. Look carefully and you'll see a crack starting.

Now see the cake as it looked when we arrived at the restaurant. What could we do? We still needed a cake. When I asked the waitress to bring it, I explained it was the cake that had split into two with a deep chasm in it centre. She just said, "Oh, I've seen the cake". Enough said.

Just when you thought the story was over....
My sister brought 'The intellectual candle" which she had purchased from an Asian store. It's a giant ugly pink plastic flower which, when lit with a special stick (provided), causes the flower to open up with each petal alight with its own little candle. Oh, and music of course. Well, when we lit it, the petals didn't open up as quickly as they should have, and a giant flame temporarily blazed at a height not customary for a birthday candle. Luckily we were able to put it out. We were in shock, and so the moment has not been captured on film. Here is a bemused 19 year old trying to blow out his candles (tame now) without laughing.

Happy Birthday, Sasha!

Day 181 - Orange cake

I just realised how incredibly boring this photo is, especially with the colour of the table blending with the cake, but oh well. Just the day for baking - cold, incredibly windy, short periods of lashing rain. Orange cake has always been one of my favourites. Mmmmm... can't wait for a big slice with coffee.

Day 155 - Left-over cake

Left-over cake on the second day is often even better than the first day. How so? Well, the second day you already know how delicious it is, and you anticipate the cake. The first day you might have it at the end of a long and overindulgent meal, and therefore you don't appreciate it in the same way you do when you're eating it after an ordinary meal. It might improve in flavour, becoming more saturated.

The second day in general is, I think, highly underrated. On the second day, with the cake as with anything else, you know what to expect and are ready to appreciate whatever it is. You're in control of the experience whereas the first time may take you by surprise. I sometimes think I would have enjoyed my wedding day more on the second day. It was too new an experience, and I wasn't prepared emotionally or mentally - too many conflicting feelings overwhelming me. The second day I would be confident, and would be able to savour the moment.

This post is an experiment following a conversation with a fellow photo-blogger about the difficulty of writing something worthwhile to accompany a photo when nothing much happens. How did I do?

Day 84 - Misshapen cake

I made a cake for my good friend Dawn's birthday (Dawn, I hope you're not reading this). It's a almond meal cake base with raspberries. We were laughing today at work about the fact that it's not the traditional round birthday cake, and hence misshapen. Isn't 'misshapen' a weird word? The more you look at it, the more it looks incorrect.

Day 78 - Birthday

Missing - a significant portion of a cake celebrating a significant milestone. The missing fraction is the clue. Enough said.
